The fire started shortly before 7 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 11, at 149 North Boardway, in Yonkers, said Yonkers Fire Department Assistant Chief Thomas F. Fitzpatrick Jr.
Fitzpatrick said firefighters quickly arrived on the scene and found heavy fire on the top floor of a 5-story apartment building, Fitzpatrick said.
Companies quickly stretched hose lines and began suppression efforts, he said.
"There was heavy fire damage on the top floor and water damage throughout," Fitzpatrick said.
Fifteen companies and 60 firefighters on-site extinguished the blaze and the utilities were shut off.
The Office of Emergency Management was on the scene to help with the relocation of residents.
There were 10 families that consisted of 48 adults and 38 children.
The PAL building next door was used to temporarily house the residents, the chief said.
There were a few firefighters injured. They were all treated and released.
There were no residents injuries.
The Yonkers fire investigative unit said the fire is still under investigation, but it is believed to be accidental, Fitzpatrick said.
The building was eventually turned over to the Yonkers Police Department.
Once the fire was out, firefighters assisted all occupants in retrieving valuables, medications, and pets.
